This is a mesmerizing trek to the source of the Ganges and beyond. The proximity of high Himalayan peaks is surreal. Some of the prominent peaks include Shivling, Bhagirathi sisters, Kedar dome and Sudarshan parvat.

The Gaumukh glacier is one of the largest glaciers in the world, feeding the Bhagirathi river which is the early part of Ganges. Our trek would traverse over this massive glacier to enter the beautiful high altitude meadows of Tapovan at the base of the Shivling peak.

Day 1 : Drive from Dehradun to Uttarkashi (1158m). The drive would take about 6-7 hours. Overnight at hotel/guest house.

Day 2 : Drive from Uttarkashi to Gangotri (3415m). The drive is about 3-4 hours. A stay at Gangotri would help us in acclimatization for the trek. Explore the Gangotri town. This is a prominent pilgrimage for the Hindus. The view of Surya kund waterfall is an amazing site. This is where the Bhagirathi river takes a big plunge to continue its journey further. The word Gangotri is formed from Ganga-utri, which implies the coming down of Ganga. Overnight at hotel/guest house.

Day 3 : Trek Gangotri to Cheerbasa (3580m). The trail is well defined and travels on the right side of the Bhagirathi river. Cheerbasa is about 9 kms from Gangotri and is a dense thicket of pine trees. Overnight camp.

Day 4 : Trek Cheerbasa to Bhojbasa (3775m), distance of about 5 kms. Some sections of this day are over rocky trails passing through scree and landslide zones. One should watch out for loose rocks and debris that may be falling. Bhojbasa is a vast expanse of barren land with great views of Thalay sagar, Meru, Bhagirathi and Shivling peaks. Overnight camp.

Day 5 : Trek Bhojbasa to Gaumukh (4255m), and further to Tapovan (4463m). Total distance is around 9 kms. The day would be long and tough, traversing over the massive Gaumukh glacier and then a steep climb to the Tapovan meadows. One would enjoy sights of the magnificent Shivling peak and the Bhagirathi peaks. Overnight camp.

Day 6 : Exploration day at Tapovan. A hike towards Neel Tal takes over a vantage point which gives amazing views. Return back to the camp at Tapovan for the night.

Day 7 : Trek Tapovan to Cheerbasa. Retrace your route back, passing through Bhojbasa till Cheerbasa. The day would be long and would be having a constant descent. Overnight camp.
